FLV files played with audio only

I was downloading live streams from a Korean site (http://www.winktv.co.kr/) and I could not open some of the downloaded flv files.
I get the same message (see attached file) whenever I try to open the corrupted files using vlc "vlc could not decode the format h264 (part 10)", audio plays in the background but there is no image shown.
The files that do not work are usually horizontal videos and the vertical ones work most of the time. I think it has something to do with the streaming source such as streaming from a computer webcam or a smartphone?

Hi Kelvin,

Apologies for the delayed response.

Can you please tell me what your conversion output is set to? And have you tried playing the downloaded file in any other media players?

You can also attempt to capture the streams by using other browsers with Jaksta and see if that makes a difference.

I did not convert the file after downloading, it is downloaded as flv file automatically and i set the conversion output to 'do not convert'. The file doesn't play in any media players like 'elmedia player' or 'quicktime player'.

Hi Kelvin,

Try setting the conversion Default and then attempt to play the file with VLC.

It could be that it is successfully downloading the file but in a format that is not compatible with any of your media players. Converting it should resolve it.

I changed the conversion setting to default but the converted file is zero bytes in mov format and the original file is still unplayable with the same issue. I tried downloading using both chrome and safari and it is the same.

Hi Kelvin,

Based on your description it is most likely a download failure.

It would be good if you could generate and supply a clean log file for us to look at.

To get a clean log, you will need to do the following:

- Open Jaksta Media Recorder

- Go to Preferences > General > Find Log File

- Close JMR but keep the Finder window with the log file open

- Delete the log file and still keep the Finder window open

- Reopen JMR (this will generate a new log file)

- Run one test on the problem site/stream

- Close JMR once it fails and/or the error is reproduced

- Go back to the Finder window with the new log file and then attach it here (don't copy and paste the code in it - send the file itself)

Hi Kelvin,

After looking at the log file I do suspect that the issue is a download failure.

There are a couple of troubleshooting things I can suggest:

  • Start by updating to our latest beta - https://download.shedworx.com/jaksta/beta/2.2.6_288/JakstaMediaRecorder.pkg
    • You will most likely receive a security notice when you try to install it. The security notice can be cleared and resolved by going to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General and click 'Open Anyway' (see below)
  • Attempt a test download from the site.
  • If the problem continues, go to Preferences > Streaming and set Always Record RTMP to ON (ticked).
  • Attempt a test download from the site.
  • If the problem continues, go to Preferences > Streaming and set Always Record RTMP to OFF (unticked).

If you still have no success at this point then it likely means that a fix needs to be developed for that specific site. Unfortunately we cannot get any kind of ETA or guarantee if that is the case.

Thanks Liam, downloads seem to work so far after setting Always Record RTMP to ON. However, the downloads stop when the live streams stutter or when I close the browser. Is there a way to continue downloading without staying on the streaming site?

Hi Kelvin,

Unfortunately that is not possible with live streams.

They are different to normal embedded streams in that they are happening in real time, and so need to be recorded in real time.
